Ashutosh Gowarikar is one of the new genre directors of Bollywood. Interestingly enough, Ashutosh Gowarikar did not start his life as a director. Rather for quite some time, he was an actor in Hindi and Marath films as well as television serials.
After acting in the films and serials, finally Ashutosh Gowarikar turned into a director. In the year 1993 his first directorial venture 'Pehla Nasha' was released. However, the film did not do well at the box office. Ashutosh's next venture was Aamir Khan starrer "Baazi" that was released in the year 1995. The film dealt with the theme of a righteous cop fighting against corrupt politicians and terrorists.
Ashutosh Gowarikar has the credit of acting in films made by famous directors of Bollywood. His role as Ranjeet Prakash, one of the main characters in Ketan Mehta's "Holi" gave him a name as an actor in the industry.
Next followed, a role in the film "Naam". The other films in which he played roles include the critically acclaimed movies "Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro", "Goonj", "Gawahi", "Chamatkar" and "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa". He further acted in quite a few Marathi films like "Vazir" and "Sarkarnama".
Ashutosh Gowarikar's acting career includes doing meaty roles in various television serials. He was paired opposite Bhagyashree in Amol Palekar-directed serial 'Kachchi Dhoop'. In the tele-serial 'Circus', he enacted the role of a trapeze artist, who was bitten by acting bug. He also acted in the serial 'CID' in the year 1999.
The landmark in Ashutosh Gowarikar's career was the film "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India". This film which had some British actors saw Aamir Khan in the role of a farmer and had cricket as its main theme. The film which was a major hit also earned international accolades. This was the second Indian feature film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the Oscar. The film earned rave reviews of the direction of Ashutosh Gowarikar.
Ashutosh Gowarikar decided to become a producer with his third film 'Swades'. In the year 2002, he launched his production house Ashutosh Gowarikar Productions for producing 'Swades'. The film which is based on a true incident tells the story of an NRI who brings hydel power electricity to a village in India. The second film produced by the joint effort of UTV and Ashutosh Gowarikar Productions is 'Jodha Akbar', which deals with the love story of Emperor Akbar who married Rajput princess Jodhaabai.
Besides donning the hat of a director and producer of films, Ashutosh Gowarikar has also made five commercials for Coca Cola, starring Aamir Khan. This talented actor cum director has also lent his voice also for a song in the film 'Swades'.
