The film has been directed by versatile director Shyam Benegal and it has been produced by Farouq R. Rattonsey. Shyam Benegal is known to be a master craftsman in the art of film direction. The veteran and award-winning director has weaved a magic through his rare talent of story telling. His film is also marked for its wonderful music composition by A. R. Rahman. The lyrics of the film have been written by Javed Akhtar.
Zubaida, the central character played by Karishma Kapoor belongs to a rather conservative Muslim family.
The family does not allow its daughter to work as an actress. The irony is that her father himself has an affair with a leading actress of the studio but he keeps away his daughter from the glamorous world of film. One day, Zubauda's father finds his daughter dancing on the tunes of a tribal song for the man who has bought the studio from him.
As a consequence, Zubaida is forcefully put into a premature marriage with the son of her father's best friend. Zubauda gets pregnant and as soon as she delivers, a she is confronted with a family feud. The situation leads to her divorce, ultimately.
At this point, Zubaida is solaced by Rose who stands to her father's actress mistress. The support extended by Rose towards Zubaida helps her to survive the trauma. In the course of the film, Zubaida accompanies Rose to a polo match where she meets the royal prince Victor, a character played by Manoj Bajpai. A romance soon develops between them and she leaves her child behind to the world of royalty, fancy and freedom.
After getting married to Victor, Zubaida meets Mandakini, a character played by Rekha. Mandakini is the first wife of Victor. She teaches Zubaida the royal etiquettes but Zubaida does not like the formalities. She complains of the situation to her husband. Her husband also favors Mandakini. At this juncture Victor faces a political crisis and leaves his palace with his first wife for a campaign. Zubaida objects to it. The situation ultimately leads to her doom.
