Ek Duuje Ke Liye is a Bollywood Movie released in 1981 directed by K. Balachander. It was one of the finest movies of its times portraying a cross culture romance between a south-Indian boy and a north-Indian girl which however culminates on a tragic note. Along with fine direction, and excellent performance, Ek Duuje Ke Liye wins hearts of cine lovers with its unique presentation and storyline.
Star Cast of Ek Duuje Ke Liye:
Kamal Haasan playing Vasudev and Rati Agnihotri in the role of Sapna are the two leading protagonists. Along side other actors and their character names are as follows:
The film is a mainly a tragic love story about people from two different caste and community. The plot revolves around the love between a Tamil man called Vasu played by Kamal Haasan and a Gujarati woman- Sapna played by Rati Agnihotri. They are neighbors and come from two different backgrounds.
In spite of their caste, community and language being a big hurdle, they come closer and fall in love with each other. When their parents come to know about them, there occurs a chaos at their homes. Their parents are totally against the idea of their marriage. To separate the lovers, their parents impose a condition that both of them have to stay away from each other for a year, and if they still want to get married they can do so after one year of their separation.
Both Vasu and Sapna agree to the condition of separation for a year. Both the lovers suffer a lot in the initial months of separation. Meanwhiel Vasu moves to Hyderabad where he starts taking lessons in Hindi from Sandhya (Madhavi), a widow. In the meantime, Chakram (Rakesh Bedi) proposes Sapna but she rejects. There arise a few misunderstandings between the lovers due to this proposal and Vasu decides to marry Sandhya. Soon Sandhya comes to know of Vasu's true love and clears the misunderstanding between them.
Vasu returns after a year of separation from Sapna and go to meet here parents. He impresses her parents by his Hindi and then goes to meet Sapna. When things begin to look good, the film takes a tragic turn when he is attacked by an assassin hired by Sandhya's brother and Sapna gets raped at a temple. At the end, they both decide to commit suicide.
The film received several awards including Filmfare Best Lyricist Award to Anand Bakshi for the song "Tere Mere Beech" and fimfare nominations for best actor, actress, supporting actor and story.
Ek Duuje Ke Liye became one of the finest Bollywood tragic love stories which also saw South-Indian actor Kamal Haasan appear for the first time in a Hindi film.
