Chocolate is one of the Bollywood thriller films that hit the silver screen in the year 2005. The film besides an innovative title and the apparent paradox revolving around it has a successful cast. The tagline of the film Chocolate is "Not a sweeter one" and the paradox of this with the situations involved constitutes one of the dynamic attractions of the film.
The cast of Chocolate is a multi talented one including the likes of Anil Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi, Sunil Shetty, Irfan Khan, Arshad Warsi, Tanushree Dutta and Sushma Reddy. The plot of Chocolate revolves round seven unlucky Indians who have been detained by the London police on suspicion for certain violent incidents that took place during Christmas. Loosely based on the film "The Usual Suspects", Chocolate is one of the typical Bollywood pot boilers which blend elements of thrill, romance, violence and other forms of popular entertainment in a package. Sim played by Tanushree Dutta and PP played by Irfan Khan are the "usual suspects" in this movie who have been detained by the British police for interrogation.
Chocolate which is directed and written by Vivek Agnihotri plays with a number of stereotypical situations like Asians being held in Britain as terror suspects and the inefficiency of the British police.
However while the film takes on the stereotypical images of George Bush, Osama Bin Laden and even caricatures the Queen, the movie itself includes a lot of predictable situations. Tanushree Dutta completely fits her role as the femme fatale figure and adds oodles of style in her chracter. However Anil Kapoor as the eccentric lawyer Krish brilliantly depicts his character. Sushma Reddy plays the quintessential journalist, clumsy and yet attractive in an unusual way. They meet with Sim and PP to recall and unravel the truth of the bizarre incidents for which they have been charged.
Along with this, there is a parallel unraveling of the past of Sim and PP within the present plot of the film. This journey down the memory lane brings to the fore the friendship of the pair with Devaa, Tubby and Rocky played by Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi and Sunil Shetty. They recollect the subsequent differences of opinion between them. The flashback sequences take the audiences to an eerie world which gradually explores the death of these people described by PP and Sim with an almost animated relish.
Facts about Chocolate inform that it has been produced by Vibha-Ragini while its lyrics derive credit from Dev Kohli, Ajeet Srivastava and Mayur Puri. Though much of the film is senseless and the plot is a bizarre imitation of its Hollywood counterpart, Chocolate can be attributed as a successful thriller movie. It has sensible characterization especially from Irfan Khan to make itself within the list of the coveted films of 2005.
