Bhoot is a blockbuster movie of 2003. It is one of the famous Bollywood thriller Movies. The movie is about a young couple who come to stay at a posh flat in the city of Mumbai. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma the film deals with the inexplicable supernatural events. Bhoot is one of those Hindi movies which doesn't have a single song in it. The background score is haunting and is very much in tune with the theme of the story. The popularity of Bhoot inspired a remake in Tamil under the title Shock which stars Meena and Prashanth.
The story of Bhoot is about Vishal (Ajay Devgan), a stock analyst, and his wife Swati (Urmila Matondkar). The couple is in search of an apartment in Mumbai. Finally, Vishal find s wonderful flat on the 12th floor of a city housing. The couple remained unaware of the terrifying past of the apartment.
As the story proceeds we come to know that the previous owner of the flat was a young woman who had killed her little baby and committed suicide by jumping from the balcony.
Swati learns about the story a short while after moving into the flat. She gets fixated with the story and a series of inexplicable events change her doubts to a belief that the flat has the woman's spirit in it.
Whatever happens after that is horrifying yet interesting. Swati passes through immense psychological trauma and is driven nearly to madness by the varied unusual incidents. Vishal thinks Swati to have some psychological disorder and calls Dr. Ranjan(Victor Banerjee for her treatment.
On the other hand, the maid of the house, Seema Biswas strongly believed that Swati is possessed by the spirit of the dead woman. She brings an exorcist played by Rekha to rescue Swati from the clutches of the evil spirit.
Along with it a series of other events also take place in and around the building. Erratic behavior of a resident of the building, the terrorized watchman and a murder in the mean time increase the complexities of the plot.
Inspector Liaqat Quereshi played by Nana Patekar comes to investigate the murder occurred in the building. Throughout the movie the psychiatrist and the exorcist try their best to cure Swati of the unknown ailment. But all their attempts go in vain.
The finesse with which Ramgopal Verma directed this horror movie is praiseworthy. The audience never felt the horror to be artificial and imposed. Whatever happened seemed inevitable.
