This Bollywood blockbuster movie has a mix of romance, comicality, supernatural elements and psychology. The movie is an Indian psychological thriller. Bhool Bhulaiyaa is the official remake of the Malayalam film, Manichitrathazhu released in 1993. The movie starred Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Shiny Ahuja, Vidya Balan and Amisha Patel in main roles. Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav essay their characters brilliantly.. The music of Bhool Bhulaiyaa were authored by Sameer and composed by Pritam.

The filming of Bhool Bhulaiyaa started in February 18, 2007. It had a 41-day filming schedule at Jaipur, India. The movie was released on October 12, 2007.

The story of Bhool Bhulaiyaa features Siddharth Chaturvedi who is based in the US coming to his hometown and planning to stay with his young bride in a century-old havelli. He comes to his hometown in India after a long journey. But the actual journey of mystery, shock, surprise, discovery and revelation starts while staying here. After he reaches his hometown, his large extended family welcomes him and his newly wedded wife Avni aka Vidya Balan.

Siddharth belongs to a royal family and insists on staying in his royal ancestral mansion. But his family doesn't agree with it and so does his uncle, Badrinarayan Chaturvedi. The reason of not allowing is that the mansion has a deadly secret. This secret has destroyed various generations of the family.

Avni along with Nandini, one of Siddarth's relatives opens a locked forbidden room. Avni learns about Manjulika and her sad story. Manjulika was a court dancer who loved Shashidhar, another dancer and poet but she also caught the attention of a king. The king tries to get her by killing Shashidhar. Siddharth suspects Radha for all the weird happenings. He thinks that she is doing this as he was supposed to marry her, but instead married Avni.

In Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Siddharth is a scientifically inclined person and doesn't believe in all the supernatural phenomena and paranormal mysteries. He stays in his palace along with his wife who is also a modern woman. But soon they realize that there is something peculiar in the palace. They experience unforeseen happenings, horrific indications, life threatening incidents and mysterious elements. They try to rectify the problem.

Siddharth ask his doctor friend, Aditya to come and find a solution. Therefore he comes on a mission to find the causes of these incidents. He uses modern analytical techniques to find the cause of the ghost problem. Later Aditya finds out that Avni has Dissociative identity disorder which affects a person's identity. Avni imagines herself as Manjulika and tries to kill her husband as she sees him as the old king who killed her lover.

In the end of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Aditya asks Manjulika whether she will leave Avni if she can kill the king. Aditya realizes that Avni is too much engrossed in fairy tales and myths and religious rituals. Instead of doing psychoanalysis he takes a traditional way. A ritual takes place and Manjulika is tricked and she kills a dummy of Siddharth. She thinks that she has killed the king and Avni gets cured. In the end Aditya proposes Radha to marry him.
