Traffic Signal is a movie based on the lives and conditions of the people residing around a traffic signal area of Mumbai. In a traffic signal area, you can spot beggars including kids and adults, tricksters, eunuchs as well as prostitutes. There are also some vendors shown in the movie who sell clothes and flowers in the traffic signal area. The vendors try to convince the people to buy their products. However, all these people earning livelihood from the traffic signal area has to pay weekly protection fee or hafta to the 'Signal Manager'. In the movie, Kunal Khemu named as Silsila is the Signal Manager.

Silsila is engaged in several trades at the traffic signal area before he becomes the Signal Manager. The money that Silsila extracts as hafta finally is submitted to Haji bhaijaan, the big boss.



One day Rani, a girl comes to the Traffic Signal to sell some ethnic clothes. The character of Rani is played by Neetu Chandra in this movie. Silsila gradually becomes close with Rani.

Haji bhaijaan works with in close collaboration with deadlier gangsters and corrupt politicians. Haji bhaijaan wants to engage Silsila in a series of events which would finally demolish the traffic signal. Unaware of the consequences, Silsila decides to abide by his master. Gradually, he gets trapped in an unholy nexus and get involved in murder, extortion and bribery case. Ultimately Traffic Signal get destroyed and Silsila decides to fight back for justice.

Through the movie, Traffic Signal Madhur Bhandarkar beautifully portrays the life of the people living in the traffic signal zones.
