Parineeta means "married woman" and the plot intrigues revolve round the misunderstandings related to the marriage of Lolita. Lolita and Shekhar are childhood friends and their friendship gradually evolved into a love relationship. Shekhar's father acted as a catalyst for the separation of Shekhar and Lolita. A series of misunderstandings make things more complicated. The film ends with a happy note when Shekhar defies his father and returns back to Lolita. Parineeta was praised by both the viewers and the critics. It even got Filmfare Awards for several categories. Pradeep Sarkar was awarded the National Award for the Best first Film category. Parineeta was also showcased in various international film festivals.
Saif Ali was perfect in the role of Shekhar, the egoist lover of Lolita who is also jealous of Girish. Bidya Balan on the other hand could do justice to the character of Lolita, an educated dignified woman in love with Shekhar. The musical elements have been incorporated in the film through the love episodes of Shekhar and Lolita. Both of them were passionate singers. The tunes of Shantanu Moitra are truly engrossing. The music of this Bollywood movie has received special appreciation.
Sanjay Dutt is the good samaritan who tries to help the family of Lolita when they were facing acute financial crisis. Raima Sen plays an important role, Koel, the sweet sister of Lolita. Raima is a cheerful character who is also aware of her responsibilities. Parineeta depicted Bengali life at the turn of the century and the theme of social marriage which was highly class specific. Lolita and Shekhar were actually representing two economic classes of the society, the business class and the middle class who has lost the grandeur. All should watch this movie to get a fair idea of the then society, the flaws of the same and definitely to enjoy the music given by Shantanu Moitra.
