Paar when translated in English means "The Crossing". Paar is directed by a well known director named Goutam Ghose. He has directed several social movies and Paar is one of his well known film. Shabana Azmi was the leading lady of this film. Her name in this film was Rama. Naseruddin Shah was the hero of the film and the name of his character in this film is Naurangi. Om Puri plays the character of Ram Naresh. Utpal Dutt plays the role of the landlord in this film.

Paar portrays the atrocities met by the untouchables in a village in Bihar.

The landlord oppresses the people living in the village. The person who dares to speak against the landlord is killed. The schoolmaster who stands for the truth is killed. All the untouchables are forced out of their houses and shot by the landlord's men and their houses and set on fire. The laborer Naurangia which is played by Naseruddin Shah escapes this massacre by assassinating the brother of the landlord. Naurangia with his wife Rama which is played by Shabana Azmi run away in order to save their life and get justice. But when they move out of the village they cannot find any other way to survive.

The little money which they have is taken away by a man who promises Naurangia a job in a jute mill in Calcutta. In the meantime Rama gets pregnant and they both decide to return back home. But as no money is left with them they feel very helpless. A man offers Naurangia and Rama a job of driving a herd of pigs to the other bank of a river. They are scared of losing the baby but since there is no way out they both opt for this job. In the end they cross the river and Naurangia hears the heartbeat of the unborn child in Ramas womb by placing his ears on her belly.

Paar: The Awards

This film got the best screenplay for Goutam Ghose and Partha Banerjee in the year 1986. Naseruddin Shah won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1985. In the same year Shabana Azmi won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Paar. In 1984 Naseruddin Shah was awarded the best actor award in the Venice Film Festival.

Paar is among the renowned bollywood movies which give a strong message about the life and struggle of the untouchables in the Indian society.
