Nishant is one of the most successful films of Shyam Benegal. The movie is a translation of "Night's End" and was a hit movie of the year 1975. The movie was written by the notable playwright Vijay Tendulkar.
The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in the year 1977. The impact of the film was so immense that it was invited in many international film festivals. It was invited in the Cannes Film Festival, Melbourne Film Festival 1977, London Film Festival 1976 and also the Chicago Film Festival 1977. In the Chicago Film Festival it bagged the Golden Plaque award.
It is the second film of Shyam Benegal with Shabana Azmi after Ankur. Most of the actors who acted in the film Ankur were seen in this movie. The film exposes the corrupt world of the landowners and people who are in power. It shows a feudal village of 1940s where the wife of new schoolmaster, Sushila, is kidnapped by the zamindar's brothers. The school master tries to rescue his wife taking the help of the police and the local administration. But all their efforts turn out to be futile.
On the other hand Shusila is shown as a very intelligent lady. She utilizes the time and demands concessions on many things. She also manages the right to go to the kitchen and cook. Vishwam, the youngest brother of the zamindar falls in love with the Shusila. Rukmini, the wife of the Vishwam fears her position. In the mean time, the local pandit incites the schoolmaster who protests against the dictatorship of the zamindar.
While Girish Karnad plays the role of the school master, Naseeruddin Shah enacts the character of Vishwam. Smita Patil enacts the role of Rukmani while Shabana is Shusila in the film. The main twist of the film comes when the villagers kill both Rukmani and Sushilla.
The film was written by Vijay Tendulkar while the dialogue was written by Satyadev Dubey. The music of the film is composed by Vanraj Bhatia while Govind Nihalani is the cinematographer. It is one of the most popular Hindi movies, still talked about by movie lovers.
Nishant is a film that deals with the social scenario that was prevalent in the villages of India during the 1950s and the 1960s. It is one of the best Indian cinemas to see many popular Bollywood actors in their unpolished form.
