Story of Namak Harram is written by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Story associate of Namak Harram is Chandra Kanta Singh. Mohini N Sippy is the associate story writer and associate screenplay writer of the film Namak Harram. In the film we see, Somnath or Somu living in a slum with his mother and unmarried sister. Somnath's father has died. Somnath is a friend of Vikram Maharaj, a Kolkata based wealthy man. Vikram's father Damodar met with a cardiac arrest. After the cardiac arrest Damodar was advised by the doctors for a rest of two months.
Vickram had to take the responsibility of his father's business. From the very beginning he entangles in a feud with a union leader of his father's factory. The union leader was Bipinlal Pandey. The result of this feud was a strike of the factory. At this point the ailing father of Vikram had to intervene in the matter. He judged the whole situation and asked his son to beg an apology to Bipinla. Vicky did what his father asked him to do.
But in his mind Vikram could not take the incident so easily. Vikram told the entire event to his Delhi based friend Somnath. Somnath and Vikram hatched a conspiracy to teach Bipinlal a lesson. Somnath joined the factory as a labor. Somnath became the leader of the union by the secret help of Vikram. He won the fellow labors by arranging a few benefits for them. Damodar the father Vikram found that his son is now being influenced by the middle-class ideas of the union leader Somnath. He wanted to make a break between the friendship of Vikram and Somnath..
