This film portrays a realistic idea of people going abroad and settling there and facing real life problems. Some people are attracted to the glamor of foreign countries while others are forced migrating in search of jobs. The Indians who settle abroad pine for their family in their motherland and the family members also miss them. The film makes one thing very clear that glamor and prosperity of the West cannot really take you out of your roots.
The theme is discussed through the events of the life of a widow played by Nutan. She has got two sons, Sanjay Dutt and Kumar Gaurav. Sanjay Dutt, the younger so went to Dubai in search of jobs but unfortunately, he was cheated and he ended up working for a gangster. He fails to keep contact with his home, mother and brother in India because of his in criminal activities. Moreover, he never wanted to disclose to his mother what he was actually doing. The elder brother set off to search for Sanjay Dutt. The film focuses a lot on this journey of the elder brother and this journey is packed with music, drama and action.
Naam is also famous for its musical scores. Laxmikant Pyarelal was the music director of the film. What can be the better presentation of the theme than the composition "Chhitthi Aayi Hai" that has been used in the film. The song focuses on the emotions of the Indian parents waiting for "Chhitthi" or letter from their son in abroad. The song was a bit hit and the NRIs are still quite sensitive about the lyrics of this particular song.
Naam also hits the common conception that everything goes well in abroad and if you can manage to go there, you will surely be a millionaire. Mahesh Bhatt reminds us of the proverb, "All that glitters is not gold". Life can be miserable too in a foreign country. Sanjay Dutt was praised for his engrossing performance and Nutan was brilliant in the role of Indian mother. Amrita Singh got a sensible role to play. She was also the love interest of Sanjay Dutt. Naam is a well made film with serious social connotations.
