Masoom marks the directorial debut of the ace director Shekhar Kapur. The film starred Naseerudin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Supriya Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey and child actors like Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar. The screenplay and dialogues in Masoom were written by Gulzar. Rahul Dev Burman has given the music of the film.
Masoom was released in the 1983. The plot of the story was based on Erich Segal's Man, Woman and Child. The screenplay and dialogues were very beautifully written. Gulzar and R.D. Burman did a fantastic work while composing the music for Masoom.
The story line of the movie is very simple but is very touching. The story goes like D K Malhotra lives with wife Indu and his two children Pinky and Minni. One day he receives a telegram from his old school master in Nainital. He was not aware off the fact that his one night stand with Bhavana had resulted in a child. As Bhavana had died, his master asks him to take his son Rahul with him. He brings the child to his home.
DK does his best to make Rahul comfortable but fails. Rahul also feels that Indu does not really like him. But Pinky and Minni have taken to him in a big way. But incidently Rahul finds that DK uncle was his biological father. Rahul suddenly disappears from DK's house and his absence was very painful to every member in the house including Indu. At last Indu accepted Rahul and the story ends in a happy note.
Roles played by actors and actress are as follows
The Rangeela girl Urmila Mantondkar appeared in the film as one of the child artist in the film. Jugal Hansraj was who played the role of Rahul in this film is now one of the Bollywood star.
Shekhar Kapur the director of Masoom also continued his job by making nice films like Mr. India, Bandit Queen and Elizabeth.
Masoom is one of the finest social Bollywood Movies ever made.
