Synopsis of Mangal Pandey:
Mangal Pandey begins in the year 1857. During this time, the British East India Company used to rule India. Mangal Pandey is one of the soldiers of the East India Compamny, who is fighting the Anglo Afghan War. A strong friendship with Captain William Gordo developed when Mangal Pandey saved his life.
Amisha Patel as Jwala, played the love interest of Captain William Gordo. Heera, played by Rani Mukherjee on the other hand catches the eye of Mangal Pandey and a relationship develops between the two.
With the introduction of Enfield rifle, a rumor began to spread among the soldiers that, the cartridge is either made of beef or pig fat. It became a religious issue for both Hindus and Muslims. The Indian soldiers were supposed to bite the cartridge to use it. It was unacceptable to the Hindus as well as the Muslims. When the Indian soldiers opposed to this idea, the East India Company suggested them to create cartridge with religiously acceptable greasing agent such as vegetable oil. This proved to the soldiers that the issued cartridges were made of beef or pig fat.
The suggestion to open the cartridge with their hands seemed impractical as opening the cartridge with their mouth is second nature to the soldiers. In the mean time, Gordon assures Mangal that the cartridges are not made of pig or beef fat. He believes Gordon and bites the cartridge. But it was soon discovered that, the rumor was true. This caused resentment among the soldiers. The film ends with Mangal Pandey leading the mutiny. It also features a documentary footage of Mahatma Gandhi.
