A milestone in the career of popular Hindi movie actor Vinod Khanna, Imtihaan turned out to be a one of its kind. Imtihaan, as the term signifies in Hindi, deals with a unique kind of a test or examination, a situation that was not discussed in the public domain till then. Though the film failed to make much headway in terms of earnings, Imtihaan proved to be a trend setter. Not later, film makers in Bollywood started dealing with a variety of subjects that hitherto were untouched.

Casting of Imtihaan

Vinod Khanna is the lead actor in this 1974 movie called Imtihaan. Produced by B A Chandiramani, the movie has background music score by the renowned Laxmikant Pyarelal. Madan Sinha directed this controversial though well prepared movie. Tanuja is the lead female actor in Imtihaan while Bindu plays a negative but important role in this flick. Sapru, Murad and Ranjit are the other major actors while Deven Verma and Asit Sen adds to the comedy element.

Storyline of Imtihaan

Imtihaan deals with an individual who is dedicated and honest about his work. A professor played by Vinod Khanna, tries to give the best of skills and training to his students. A popular figure, this professor is popular among the college students though some are not very comfortable with his rising popularity. Some of his colleagues too are unhappy with this situation and a conspiracy to defame the professor is planned.

Bindu who belongs to a rich family is one of the students who feel enamored by this good looking, no-nonsense professor. What follows is a tragic situation when the professor has to undergo a series of mental trauma and harassment before the students and his peers. In the end though, truth comes out in the open and everybody realizes their mistake. The professor is vindicated but he does not choose to blame his students and others who tried to defame him and finally leaves the place.

From the critical perspective, Imtihaan has a strong screenplay and dialogues. The performance of lead actors, especially Vinod Khanna and Bindu is remarkable. Tanuja has a small role but has done well while Ranjit in the negative role too has something to talk about. The title song, "ruk jana nahin, tu kahin haar ke," became one of the major hits among the Bollywood songs of the time.
