Ijaazat released in the year 1987. This Hindi movie was well acclaimed. Ijaazat when translated in English means permission. The director of this Bollywood movie is Gulzar. This film is based on the story of a couple portrayed by Rekha and Naseruddin Shah. It is about their life, estrangement and their accidental meeting in a waiting room of a railway station. Maya is a woman who does not believe in the institution of marriage. Mahinder is in love with her but she is not ready to marry him. She is a true romantic and goes out to unknown destinations without informing anyone. Mahinder gets concerned about her. He is pressurized by his family to get married. Mahinder is unable to find Maya. Due to family pressure he marries his friend named Sudha who is a teacher. Mahinder tells Sudha about Maya after marriage. But after returning Maya still keeps returning to Mahinder's house. Sudha is unable to accept this and leaves Mahinder without his permission. She leaves him without his Ijaazat. This popular Bollywood social movie rolls out in flashback when after many years they both accidentally meet in a railway station waiting room and narrate their lives to each other.

Ijaazat: The Awards

This film has won several awards. These awards include the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1988. This award was bagged by Asha Bhosle for the song "Mera Kuch Samaan". It also got the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in the same year. This award was received by Gulzar for the song "Mera Kuch Samaan". In the year 1989, Gulzaar won the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for this film.
