Damini is a story about a woman's struggle for justice. Damini was leading a happy married life until she witnessed the rape episode by her brother-in- law. The maid servant was raped and Damini could not support the heinous action of her brother- in- law and that too within the house. The incident haunted her all the time and she decided to speak the truth without caring about the honor of her in laws. It is this decision of Damini which complicates the plot. Meenakshi Sheshadri was awesome in her portrayal of the psychological conflict between her conscience and her responsibility to keep the honor of the in- laws intact. The conflict came to an end with her decision to go by her conscience.
Damini deals with a host of social issues ranging from the pros and cons of a rape to the exploitation of the influential ones in the society.
The film also questions the conventional role of a married woman in a society. It hits the conservative in laws who still think that daughter- in- laws are for serving food on the dining table and not the moral guardian of the family. Damini was not supported by her in- laws in her venture to stand by the raped girl. The in- laws on the other hand were too busy in protecting the son of their house, the main criminal. The in laws also tried to stop Damini from giving her version of the incident in the court. The director showed that the people who stand for truth ultimately win the game. Damini also got victory in her struggle for justice because she was helped by an alcoholic lawyer, a man with a conscience. Damini also got the moral support from her dear husband.
Damini ends with a happy note but definitely lets the viewers ponder over some serious social issues. The film has drama, emotions, romance, action, suspense and numerous good songs. In short, Damini serves as a complete entertainer and at the same time tries to reform the human attitudes towards a rape victim.
