Astitva is one of the most famous Bollywood social movies which created ripples immediately after it was released. The film questions on some uncommon issues related with married life and on women's rights. The film points out the question why extra marital affair is considered as the only privilege of man while a female found doing the same is accused of infidelity. Astitva also puts forward some socila issues like the right of employment of women, women's wish regarding sex .
Astitva is produced by Jhamu Saughand and directed by Mahesh Majerkar The film features a host of leading actors and actresses of Bollywood like Tabu, Sachin Khedekar, Mohnish Behl, Namrata Shirodkar. Music in the film is directed by Rahul Ranade and Suknwinder Singh. Lyrics of the music are composed by Shrirang Godbole and Suknwinder Singh.
Astitva rotates the round the central character Aditi who is an common house wife.
The crisis in the film begins when a letter arrives in the family with the news that Aditi bequeathes the property of Malhar, her former music teacher. Srikant, Aditi's husband becomes suspicious of his wife's affair with Malhar. Finally he comes to know that Aniket, the couple's son is fathered by Malhar. Aditi is deserted by her own husband and her son after they come to know of the truth.
Aditi plays the central character of Tabu. The role of her husband is played by Sachin Khedekar. What makes the film stand apart among the other Bollywood movies is the superb portrayal of emotions by Tabu. Other characters of the film are also excellently enacted. The film brings out the mastery of the director. The narrative of the film includes the techniques of flashbacks and all the scenes are nicely sequenced and do not leave any scope of disappointment of the audience. The music is apt and sets the back drop of the film very nicely.
The language of Astitva is in Hindi. It is a color film and is one of the most renowned social movies in Bollywood. The film has wide acclamation from the international critics too. The film has received a number of awards. In the year 2000, Tabu received the Filmfare Best Actress Award for acting in this film. Star Screen Award Best Actress and Star Screen Award for Best Story went to Tabu and Mahesh Manjrekar respectively in the same year for their contributions to the film. .
