The songs in the movie became very famous especially the song sung by Kishore Kumar "dil aisa kisi ne mera toda". Kishore Kumar won the Filmfare award in 1975 for this song. This song also won lyricist Indeevar a filmfare that same year.

The story of Amanush is about a simple and honest man Madhusudan Chaudhury. Madhu, as he is called lives with his paternal uncle who owns an estate. There is a person called Dr Anand who has a sister, Rekha. The latter and Madhu love each other and plan to get married soon.

Madhu, otherwise a happy-go-lucky fellow, maintains the records of his uncle's property. He loves to drink and has a gala time. All is well and life in this quaint fishing village is peaceful. The twist in the story comes with entrance of Champa. This person tells Rekha that Madhu has been having a physical relationship with her and as a result she is expecting.

Rekha on hearing this asks Madhu about it. Madhusudan tells her that he had nothing to do with it. Rekha does not believe him, he gets furious and goes in search of Champa. This lady has vanished and cannot be found anywhere. The twist in the storyline of Amanush comes with the sudden arrest of Madhu on charges of stealing money from his uncle. He is sentenced to several years of prison. Madhu goes to jail and starts serving his sentence.

After some years Madhu returns home but finds his uncle's property in the hands of his employee. Maheem Ghosal played by Utpal Dutt is the villain who had framed false charges on Madhu. Rekha meanwhile hates him and Champa is still missing. Madhu turns into an embittered man and starts drinking heavily. He truly becomes "Amanush", which means inhuman and insensitive.

Uttam Kumar as Madhu is brilliant in his role as a drunken angry man. He is feared by all and nobody wants to venture close to him. Things change with the arrival of the inspector Bhuwan Roy. He smells rat in the whole business and suspects that Madhu had nothing to do with the stealing. He begins investigating and finds Maheem Ghosal alias Utpal Dutta to be guilty of the charge.

Sharmila Tagore as Rekha, Abhi Bhattacharya as Dr Anand and Anil Chatterjee as Inspector Bhuwan Roy deliver good performances. Utpal Dutt as the villainous Maheem Ghosal is brilliant.
