Aar Paar was released in 1954 and marked Guru Dutt's signature style of romantic thriller in his later years. The movie captures the attention of the viewers with light hearted comedy blending in with the thrilling plot involving a gang. This is complimented by the triangular love story that is the main plot.

Plot of Aar Paar

The story opens with Kalu, played by Guru Dutt, who is a taxi driver in Bombay (Mumbai). It is while driving this taxi that he lands into trouble with the law. On charges of speeding Kalu is arrested and sentenced to a prison term. However his term pardoned by two months for is amiable behavior. After releasing from prison our protagonist of Aar Paar goes back to his employer. This man refuses to let a felon drive his taxi. Kalu is then seen loitering through the streets of Mumbai.

It is here that Kalu meets his lady love.

Its a damsel in distress being saved by her knight in shining armor situation. Nikki, the female protagonist is thankful to Kalu for fixing her car. This is the reason perhaps that induces her to employ Kalu, when he is thrown out by his brother - in - law. Kalu begins working at Nikki's father's garage. Soon both Nikki and Kalu fall in love.

When Nikki's father finds out about this relationship he immediately fires him. Kalu urges Nikki to run away with him. She is in a dilemma but ultimately decides to make a life with Kalu. By this time it is too late and Kalu had already left. Meanwhile Kalu finds a job at a club run by "Captain".

Captain is the head of a bunch of crooks and together this gang plans to rob a bank. Things get complicated with the presence of Shakila, the cabaret dancer. She is apparently attracted to Kalu but he only has feelings for Nikki. Shakila realizes this and plans with Captain to kidnap Nikki. The next set of events finds the lovers reunited and the crooks put behind bars.

Nikki is played by veteran actress Shyama whereas the male protagonist Kalu is played by Guru Dutt himself. Johnny Walker is brilliant as the Parsi character - Rustom. The film was directed by Guru Dutt, The screenplay was handled by Nabendu Ghosh. The crisp dialogues was the working of Abrar Alvi's pen . Aar Paar was a home production of Guru Dutt's production house, Guru Dutt Films Private Limited. This 1954 black and white film marked Guru Dutt's creative genius.
