From the very beginning this Bollywood movie was entangled into controversy. This film was denied its release due to the similarity of the story of the film with the life of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The ruling congress government withheld the release of this film. The film was released after Congress was removed from the power in Delhi.

Indira Gandhi lost the general election of India in the year 1977. After the defeat of Indira Gandhi, the ruling Janata Party Government released the film. Aandhi was premiered on the national television in India. This film was starred by the famous Bengali actress Suchitra Sen.

She acted as Arati Devi. Sanjeev Kumar, a very famous actor of the Bollywood movie, also acted in this film. Sanjeev Kumar starred in the role of J.K. Om Shivpuri acted as Chandrasen.

Other notable actors of the film Aandhi were Aarti Davda and A. K. Hangal. Cinematographers of the film Aandhi were Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali. Producer of the film Aandhi is J Om Prakash Gulzar. Story of the film Aandhi was written by Kamaleshwar.

J. K. is the manager of a hotel in a beautiful location in India. One day he bravely rescued a drowning woman. The name of the woman was Arati. Arati was the daughter of a politician. They fell in love and got married. They also have a daughter.

However, due to some problems, the couple decided to separate. Years passed on and one day Arati and J.K. met again. Both of them were attracted to each other. But Arati did not want to reveal the secret about her marriage. She did not want to bear the stigma of separation which could harm her reputation as a politician.
