Aalap is the story of the struggle of a young man against ruthless superiors. It is the story of a sensitive mind who loves music. It is a Bollywood social film and is made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachan has come in Aalap at his very best. Nice songs made the movie very popular. Supporting actors and actresses have also contributed largely to the success of this film. Aalap was released in the year 1977.

The story of the film is also gripping. It goes thus: Aloke Prasad is the ward of a very powerful lawyer. He loves music and wants to study music against his father's wishes. Aloke received approval from his sister-in-law Geeta. His first music teacher was an aged woman. She narrates to her student the story of her bright past. Aloke enrolled in a music college and fared very well at the final examination.

Aloke had new aspirations and was hoeful of being successful. He wanted to learn more about music. After his return, Aloke was insisted by his father to study law.

This time Aloke could not go against his father and he started to pursue the business of law. But at the same time Aloke was also learning music from a musician living in the neighboring slum.

One day Aloke's father Triloki Prasad came to know that Aloke was learning music from Sajurbai who lived in the neighboring slum. Aloke's decision of learning music from Sajurbai seemed very ignominious to his father. Aloke's father was a very influential person. He set fire to the slum to drive away Aloke's music teacher.

Aloke was greatly shocked by his father's action. He left the house and started to live in the nearby shanty. Aloke's life totally changed in the slum. There he met Ganesh who was a coach driver of his family. Aloke became friendly with him and fell in love with Ganesh's sister. He married Ganesh's sister. Aloke started to drive tongaa to support his family. Name of the tongaa that Aloke drove was Aalap.

Producer of Aalap are Hrishikesh Mukherjee and N.C. Sippy. Music of this film is given by Jaidev. Songs of Aalap became very popular after its release. Co-cast of Amitabh Bachchan in Aalap were Sanjeev Kumar, Farida Jalal, Asrani and Rekha.
