Kewal played by Raj Kapoor wishes for the life of glamor and acting, theater is his passion. His father is a high profile lawyer and wants his son to carry on the family tradition. Raj Kapoor reluctantly goes to law school but fails in his exams. His father hearing this is furious and turns him out of his house. The story of Aag now follows how Raj Kapoor together with Rajan, played by Prem Nath makes a success of an old theater company. Nargis comes in search of work in this theater company and begins acting in plays.
Kewal named her Nimmi after an old childhood friend. Nimmi was his childhood friend and together they had nurtured the dream of making it big in theaters.
Nimmi moved away with her parents but Kewal still remembers her with fondness. Love soon blossoms between Raj Kapoor (Kewal) and Nargis (Nimmi). Rajan also falls for Nimmi; Kewal on learning this does not want to come between the two. Nimmi on the other hand is in love with Kewal. The twist in the story comes with a fire that breaks out in the theater.
This "Aag" or fire alters the life of Kewal permanently. He is badly burnt in the fire and his face is disfigured. Nimmi is devastated and immediately states that she loves Rajan. Raj Kapoor eventually gets married to Nigar Sultana. On the wedding night, the bride sees the disfigured face of her husband and screams. It remains to be seen whether Kewal finds his Nimmi. The story tells about the importance of inner beauty that needs to be recognized. Will Kewal's bride see the real man behind the disfigured face? That remains to be seen.
Aag was scripted by Inder Raj Anand. The film was released in 1948 and was directed and produced by Raj Kapoor. This film was the first time that the evergreen pair of Nargis and Raj Kapoor came together. Melodious numbers like "Dekh Chand Ki Or" and "Zinda Hoon is Tarah" marked the creative genius of Ram Ganguly.
