This is a movie on the life of a filmmaker, which depicts a man in various situations of life. This film portrays a man who has a dream which he wants to fulfill. He is courageous and has conviction. Ajay the protagonist of the film Aadharsila is a trained filmmaker. Just after completing his film training, he is married to Asha. He brings his newly married wife in the film institute to make her acquainted with the place from where he was graduated. In the film institute Ajay narrates Asha the story of change of Prabhat Studio to the Film & TC Institute.

This change was done so that the Indian film industry can get trained professionals. Passed out students of the film institute worked as successful producers of film in India. Ajay also narrates his wife that only a few students become successful as filmmakers and the rest opt other jobs.

But fortunately life of this couple is not so bad. They are rather happily married and also economically sound. Asha has got a job as a teacher in a school. Ajay too gets busy with filmmaking. We find them happy and satisfied in the film. However, their story has many turns to unfold.

Ajay's desire to find self-expression has been revealed in the film again and again. He and his friends reveal their aspiration of the young people. The film also shows the obstacles which they are facing on their journey towards their goal.

Director of Aadharsila is Ashok Gupta. He is also the script writer and producer of Aadharsila. Songs of movie are written and composed by Ranjit Kapoor. Editing of Aadharsila is done by Renu Saluja and Sharad Navle is the famous cinematographer.

This film has won Filmdukaten Award at Mannheim International Film Festival in the year 1982. It has also won the Rajatkamal Award in the same year. The year 1982 has also brought the Filamfare Critics Award for the film Aadharsila.

Aadharsila was shown in many international film festivals. This film was screened in the International Film Festival of India held at Kolkata in 1982. In the same year this film was screened at Tashkent International Film Festival, Mannheim International Filmwoche and also in Hongkong International Film Festival.
