Tezaab is known for everything what the eighty's Bollywood films embodied - a decadent society reeling under the evil forces of greed and corruption, emergence of the new-era hero who is often a victim of the circumstances, damsel-in-distress heroines in gaudy costumes, kitsch song-and-dance sequences and punch-and-kick laden action shots. Tezaab is all these and more.

This 1988 release also marked the sizzling Anil Kapoor- Madhuri Dixit on-screen chemistry which sustained Bollywood gossip columns with juicy tidbits and rumors of their real-life romance for decades to come. Anil Kapoor played the role of Mahesh Deshmukh, a college youth aspiring to join the armed forces with a purpose to serve the country honestly. But, circumstances land him up in trouble and he returns as a gangster named Munna, charged, and sentenced to stay away from the Bombay city limits.

Madhuri Dixit plays the vivacious Mohini who happens to be the once-upon-a-time sweetheart of Munna from their college days.

But, destiny sets their ways apart and Mohini struggles to come out of her abusive father's (Anupam Kher) clutches. Enter a gang of bad guys, half a dozen goons from various levels, a couple of corrupted cops and a lot more what director N. Chandra is best known for.

But, Tezaab made its mark in the box office unlike the ten other movies of similar genres which came and went without being noticed. Anil Kapoor played the role of an Eighty's youth to perfection - angry, virile and brooding, up against an evil society, a lone fighter seething for revenge. And, when an agile Madhuri Dixit swayed and gyrated and twirled her skirt to the tunes of 'Ek Do Teen...', millions of hearts were conquered with that killing smile and oomph factor. Madhuri Dixit was perhaps the first Bollywood diva of our times who ruled the screen with her gorgeous looks and unforgettable screen presence. She stomped her feet, pouted, shrieked, smiled and men sighed. And, girls swooned when Anil Kapoor hurled that fiery dialogue or gave that scorching glance.

Tezaab was heavily inspired by Hollywood's action-musical "Streets of Fire" (1984). With all the 'masala' in their right places, it was a complete 'paisa vasool' movie which won several Filmfare award in the year 1989. Anil Kapoor won in the Best Actor category while Alka Yagnik bagged the Best Playback Singer - Female award for the number' Ek Do Teen'. Saroj Khan was awarded the Best Choreographer and Kamlesh Pandey walked away with the Best Dialogue Writer award.

Tezaab brought a lease of fresh air into the genre of Bollywood Romantic Movies which were, so far, associated with mushy romance, chocolate hero images and clichéd sequences.
