Bollywood Home » Popular Movie Reviews » Souten
1980s have been a great time for Bollywood and the Indian movie watchers because some of the greatest movies of all times have been made during that period. Several romantic movies were made in Bollywood between 1980s and 90s which are still popular among people of all ages. Great performance by the actors and actresses, sweet romantic stories, great direction and good romantic songs helped these romantic movies earn huge critical success. Souten is one of the finest examples of romantic movies of that time. As a movie watcher you will surely enjoy watching Souten-the movie.
Released in the year 1983, Souten is one of the greatest romantic movies ever made in Bollywood. The movie was a super hit in the box office and successfully entertained the Indian movie watchers for several weeks. Apart from the story and great on screen performance by the actors and actresses, Souten-the movie will always be remembered for some of the greatest romantic songs of all times.
Even in the modern era of remix songs with special sound effects, the popularity of songs like Shayad Meri Shaadi Ka Khayal and Zindagi Pyar ka Geet Hai have not been lessened a bit.
The story of Souten is also very interesting. The story is about a love triangle, which was one of the most common themes in Bollywood romantic movies of that time. The movie has focused on the romance between two persons and the problems that widen the gap between them in their married life. Shyam (played by Rajesh Khanna), is an Indian who works in Mauritius and has an ambition to fulfill. Shyam meets Rukmini (played by Tina Munim), the daughter of a millionaire and eventually falls in love with her. After their relationship deepens, they decide to get married.
Rukmani's stepmother and brother oppose their wedding and try everything they could to make sure that it does not happen. However, their attempts fail and Shyam and Rukmani start leading a happy married life. But after sometimes, problems arise between the couple as they have differing perceptions about their future life. Shyam wants to be a father but Rukmani shows no interest in fulfilling his wish. She even undergoes a surgery to stop her unwanted pregnancy.
This act by Rukmani starts widening the gap between the couple and her stepmother and brother start taking advantage of the situation. Meanwhile Rukmani stars suspecting his husband for having an illegal relationship with Radha (played by Padmini Kolhapure), a librarian which just adds fuel to their misunderstanding. This makes things even easier for Rukmani's stepmother and brother.
But do they succeed? Or do Shyam and Rukmani get united once again? What happens to Radha? Well to know the answers of all these questions you have to wait till the climax of Souten. You will surely love to see the closing moments of the movie, thanks to the performance by the stars, the director, Shyam Kumar Tak and the well written script by Vijay Kaul.
