Shyam (played by Rajesh Khanna), is an Indian who works in Mauritius and has an ambition to fulfill. Shyam meets Rukmini (played by Tina Munim), the daughter of a millionaire and eventually falls in love with her. After their relationship deepens, they decide to get married.
Rukmani`s stepmother and brother oppose their wedding and try everything they could to make sure that it does not happen. However, their attempts fail and Shyam and Rukmani start leading a happy married life. But after sometimes, problems arise between the couple as they have differing perceptions about their future life. Shyam wants to be a father but Rukmani shows no interest in fulfilling his wish. She even undergoes a surgery to stop her unwanted pregnancy.
This act by Rukmani starts widening the gap between the couple and her stepmother and brother start taking advantage of the situation. Meanwhile Rukmani stars suspecting his husband for having an illegal relationship with Radha (played by Padmini Kolhapure), a librarian which just adds fuel to their misunderstanding. This makes things even easier for Rukmani`s stepmother and brother.
But do they succeed? Or do Shyam and Rukmani get united once again? What happens to Radha? Well to know the answers of all these questions you have to wait till the climax of Souten.
