Every year a good number of romantic movies are made in Bollywood. Such movies earn huge successes both commercially and critically. Not only today, but even in the last few decades, hundreds of good romantic films have been made in Bollywood that are still very popular among people. Apart from movies based on contemporary love stories, Bollywood has also come up with romantic movies that are adaptations of historical events. Sohni Mahiwaal is the perfect example of such romantic movie. Sohini Mahiwaal is a great adaptation of the love story of Sohini and Ijjat Beig and is considered as one of the best Bollywood romantic movies.

Sohini Mahiwaal-the movie turned out to be a blockbuster hit of the year 1984 and earned huge revenue from the cinema halls. Especially in the state of Punjab Sohni Mahiwaal was very well accepted by the people as the historical event took place here. The importance of river Chenab is immense in the true love story of Izzat Beig and Sohni and a major portion of the movie was shot on its bank.

The actors, especially Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon have been widely acclaimed by the movie watchers for portraying the character of Izzat Beig and Sohni so effectively.

The plot of the movie Sohni Mahiwaal is almost same as the true story. Just to make the movie more entertaining, the director, Raj Nawate has added his own touch. Thanks to a very well written script, Sohni Mahiwaal didn't face any negative criticism from the historians. In the movie, Sohni is a poor village girl who runs a shop of pitchers near River Chenab. One day a businessman named Shahzada Ijjat Beig visits the place and gets astonished by the beauty of Sohni.

Making an excuse of buying a pitcher, Ijjat Beig starts visiting Sohni everyday and slowly they come close to each other. Ijjat however, does not reveal his real identity and start working as a servant of Sohni. The scandal spreads very quickly and Sohini's parents arrange for her wedding. Sohini gets married and a frustrated Ijjat Beig who is now known as Mahiwaal (potter) starts living in a hut near the river. Sohini starts meeting Mahiwaal regularly by swimming with the help of an earthen pitcher.

In the real story, Sohini's sister-in-law one day followed her and identified the spot where she used to hide her pitcher. Next day she replaced the baked pitcher with unbaked one and when Sohini tried to swim with it got dissolved in the water and she was drowned. Seeing Sohini drowning in the river, Ijjat Beig too jumped in the water and got drowned. But does that happen in the movie too? Or something else happens. Well the answer is there in the climax of Sohni Mahiwal.
