The Bollywood blockbuster Silsila saw the light of the day in 1981 under the direction of Yash Chopra. This movie is known to star the popular actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Shashi Kapoor, Jaya Bhaduri, and Sanjeev Kumar. This popular Bollywood romantic movie is known to be based on Amitabh Bachchan's real life involving his relations with Rekha and Jaya. This movie being a Yash Chopra musical is known to be one of the movies which is so enriched with soulful musical collections that has made this movie one of the popular choices for all the age groups. The acting skills of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha, Shashi Kapoor, and Sanjeev Kumar have brought out the best in this movie.
The plot of the movie Silsila, revolves around the characters of Shekhar and Amit Malhotra portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor who were orphaned at a very young age and grow up to lead independent lifestyles. Shekhar played by Shashi Kapoor is a Squadron Leader in the Indian Air Force and Amit played by Amitabh is a struggling writer.
In their lives Shekhar falls in love with Shobha played by Jaya Bhaduri and in the mean time Amit finds the love of his life in Chandni played by Rekha. In their happiness Shekhar and Amit plan to get married on the same day but tragedy strikes as Shekhar is killed in a plane crash. Shobha is totally devastated with this and her pregnancy with Shekhar's child adds to her misery.
Under the circumstances Amit takes the decision to marry Shobha and requests Chandni to forget their relation. Chandni who is heart broken with the consequences of Skhekhar's death goes ahead to make a fresh beginning in her life when she marries Dr. V.K. Anand played by Sanjeev Kumar. Dr. Anand is very much in love with her and on the other hand Shobha is again hit with a tragedy as she looses her child in a car accident. This is the time when Chandni and Amit secretly come close to each other as without a child there is no bonding between Shobha and Amit to keep them together.
Chandni and Amit continue to meet each other secretly until one day when Chandni run over a passer by and got herself arrested. Amit somehow managed to get themselves out of this by saying that they were husband and wife. The whole issue surfaced the police officer who arrested Chandni turned out to be Shobha's cousin played by Kulbhushan. Finally Amit and Chandni realize their mistakes and decide to make a fresh beginning with their married lives. This movie features Shobha as a calm and composed wife who personifies the dignity of an Indian woman who emerges ahead of the other woman in her husband's life.
