Saudagar ranks among the popular Bollywood romantic movies. Released in the year 1991, the movie was a blockbuster. The movie was hugely successful at the box office. It made good business in the international market also. The plot construction, camera work and good music made Saudagar a huge success.
Saudagar was directed by popular film maker of the Hindi film industry, Subhash Ghai. It was distributed by Mukta Arts. The cinematography was done by Ashok Mehta. The movie starred two super stars of the yesteryears, Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar. The movie was also a debut for Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala. The plot of Saudagar is a love story between childhood friends, Veer Singh (Dilip Kumar) and Rajeshwar Singh (Raaj Kumar) who become bitter enemies due to the evil schemes of Chuniya (Amrish Puri). The enmity goes to such an extent that they divide their territories and vow to kill anyone who crosses the boundary. Amidst such tension, their grand children Vasu (Vivek Mushran) fall in love with Radha (Manisha Koirala). They often meet in secret.
Eventually everyone comes to know about the affair and the enmity re surfaces between Veer Singh and Rajeshwar Singh. The two lovers are barred from meeting. Eventually everything is solved and both Vasu and Radha marry. Chuniya is exposed. Saudagar also consisted of wonderful fight sequences on horse back.
The music of Saudagar added to its popularity. The music was composed by famous music duo Laxmikant and Pyarelal. The songs were written by Anand Bakshi. Some of the songs of the movie were chartbusters. They were very popular among the public.
The plot of Saudagar as well as the acting and music won lots of praise and acclaim. Both Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar acted wonderfully. New comers Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala also acted well.
