Raja Hindustani narrates the story of two people who come from different backgrounds; fall in love, face difficulties and ultimately achieve triumph of their love. Directed by Dharmesh Darshan, and produced by Karim Morani, Bunty Soorma and Ali Morani, Raja Hindustani is a perfect love story in which love knows no barriers. The theme is loosely based on Jab Jab Phool Khile of 1960 which featured Shashi Kapoor and Nanda. This film is a landmark film as Raja Hindustani was considered the first major hit in the kitty of Karisma Kapoor. She went for a complete makeover in this movie which was immensely liked by the moviegoers.
A small town cab driver falls in love with a rich girl from Mumbai who comes for a holiday in Palankhet. Karisma Kapoor aka Arati lives in a dream world where love reigns supreme. Her stepmother played by Archana Puransingh is not very affectionate towards the girl. She decides to go to Palankhet, the place where her parents had met for the first time. As she visits the place she is befriended by a simple next-door guy, the cab driver Raja Hindustani aka Amir Khan.
As time progresses, they fall in love with each other. The family members are dead against the match which they consider highly unsuitable.
As Arati settles down her in her quiet happy life, Mr. Sehgal, or Arati's father comes to meet her. Seeing both of them very happy in their blissful life, he realizes his mistakes and asks them to come to his house in Mumbai where he arranges for a grand reception. The newlywed couple is brought to Mumbai, unaware of Archana Puransingh's ill intentions. Archana Puransingh, her brother played by Pramod Moutho and nephew Jai aka Mohnish Behl hatch a plan to humiliate Aamir Khan.
Misunderstandings crop up between the couple and the duo is separated. Arati is pregnant with a child and she continues to live with her parents. Things grow bitter as Raj Hindustani decides to get his child from Arati. After much deliberation and unhappiness things change for the better in the end and the duo settles for a happy life. This film swept off many awards including the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Movie, and Best Music Director in the Filmfare Award ceremony..
This romantic movie is one of the greatest blockbusters of all times and is remembered by the movie buffs for the soulful performances by Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor.
