Meena Kumari is one of the greatest film stars that Bollywood has ever produced. Meena Kumari is one of those film stars who served Bollywood film industry for several years, especially in the early and mid part of 1970s. Indian movie lovers will always remember this great actress for her mind blowing performance in the movie Paqeezah. Released in the year 1972, Paqeezah is one of the best romantic movies ever made in Bollywood.
While mentioning about Paqeezah, it has to be mentioned that when it was initially released, the movie didn't get a positive response from the public and was almost considered to be flop in the box office. The things changed with the shocking and sudden death of Meena Kumari. Suddenly the movie started earning huge revenue from the cinema halls all over the country and ultimately became one of the greatest Bollywood movies of all time. Paqeezah- the movie ultimately became a tribute to the great actress.
Like many other Bollywood romantic movies of that time, music played a very important role in making Paqeezah so popular. The songs used in the movie, the lyrics and the melody were most appropriate for the theme of Paqeezah and the playback singers also did a splendid job which made it a superhit movie. Apart from the last performance of Meena Kumari, Paqezah will always be remembered for songs like Chalo dildar chalo chand ke par chalo, Chalte chaltey yunhi koi mil gaya, Inhi logon ne le liya dupata mera, Tharey rahiyo o banke yaar tharey rahiyo and Aaj hum apni dhuaon ka asar dekhenge.
Ths story of Paqeezah is great but is a little bit unusual compared to many other movies of that time. Paqeezah is actually a story of the tragic life of a prostitute with pure heart. Nargis (played by Meena Kumari) was a prostitute brought up in a brothel. She lives with her brothel madame Nawabjaan (played by Veena). Nargis grows up in the brothel and turns a popular singer and dancer. A person named Salim Ahmed Khan (played by Raj Kumar) meets Nargis and gets enthralled by her innocence and beauty. He requests Nargis to stay with him and an innocent Nargis agrees.
But wherever she goes with Salim, Nargis finds that she is being recognized as a prostitute. Salim renames her Paqeezah and arranges for a wedding but Nargis suddenly refuses and gets back to her brothel. An angry Salim decides to marry someone else and invites Nargis to dance in his wedding party. Nargis accepts the invitation but when she reaches the party the story takes a turn. It goes through a series of twists and turns. What happens after that? Well that's what Paqeezah is all about.
