Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon', a movie by Sooraj R. Barjatya and a production by Rajshri, is a remake of the 1976 movie 'Chitchor', one of the renowned Bollywood romantic movies. Featuring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles, 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' was released on June 27, 2003.
'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is the story of Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor), a girl of modern generation. She is vivacious and full of life and lives life on her own terms and gets very upset when her mother Susheela (Himani Shivpuri), arranges for her to see a boy leading to a marriage prospect. Roopa, the eldest daughter shows Sanjana's photographs to Prem's mother who instantaneously approves of her and she eventually meets Prem Kishen (Hrithik Roshan). Though at first she cannot stand him but ultimately both fall in love with each other. Her parents are happy to see that Sanjana likes him, but suddenly Sanjana's sister Roopa, sends e-mail to them and tells them that Prem could not make it.
Her parents feel perplexed at the situation and later find out that the boy that is here is not in fact the Prem, the rich N.R.I whom Sanjana was meant to meet. He is Prem Kishen, an employee in Prem Kumar's company.
It gets even worse when the real Prem (Abhishek Bachchan) arrives to meet Sanjana. Prem Kumar likes Sanjana right away and Sanjana can't believe how much she has in common with Prem Kumar. Sanjana is now indivisible from Prem Kishen, her true love.
Trouble continues; a marriage is decided for Sanjana to marry Prem Kumar with the blessing of Prem Kumar's mothers (Reema Lagoo). Prem Kishen's loyalty to his boss forces him to leave and let the marriage go on. Sanjana finally meets her soul mate when Prem Kumar gets to know the reality and decides to bring back together the couple.
Like his earlier creations, Sooraj R. Barjatya's this movie 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' does not have a story that is novel, original or path-breaking. The story follows the same beaten path, of two guys falling in love with the same girl. But it is the director's handling of this oft-repeated subject is what makes all the difference.
Like his previous movies, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' has its share of romance, light moments and songs as the story begins. The Rajshri tradition of wholesome entertainment is evident in 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' as well. But besides the family values and typical Indian emotions, Sooraj gives the film a contemporary look. There can only be two diverse opinions after you have watched the movie - either you would feel that you have got what you expected from the movie or the movie just didn't fulfil the expectations. And obviously, Rajshri's much-awaited, keenly-anticipated movie falls in the first category. To be more specific, Sooraj Barjatya wins the game for the fourth time!
