Bollywood movies were having a great time during the 1990s when a good number of quality movies were being made. Lamhe is one of the sweetest and touching love stories which Hindi film industry has produced. Released in 1991, the movie is directed and produced by Yash Chopra. Since Indian audience had already got the essence of some great romantic movies, it was a challenge for the director to offer something special to the audience. Anil Kapoor and Sridevi were the major attractions of the movie.
The movie starts of showing that Viren (Anil Kapoor) is on a visit to Rajasthan. He has accompanied his governess (Waheeda Rehman) on the trip. During his trip, the actor meets Pallavi (Sridevi) and instantly falls in love with her. But there is a slight hitch in this since she turns out to be older than him. This is not a matter of botheration for Viren. The story of Lamhe continues and a series of incidents take place that change the circumstances hostile for both of them.
After the death of Pallavi's father, Viren fulfilled his duty which she owed to her father and arranged her marriage with Siddharth. Due to an accident, both Sidhharth and Pallavi were killed within one year of their marriage. Their girl child grew up to resemble her mother. The story continues over a period of another few more years. The credit for writing such a wonderful story goes to Honey Irani. The whole movie of Lamhe has the duration of over three hours and it has been able to captivate the audience.
The movie has an intricate plot and it is due to the genius in Yash Chopra, that he managed to execute it smoothly. Lamhe has brilliantly composed music and did brilliant business in UK. Although it was not a box-office success in India, the movie was chosen the Best Film award at Filmfare. In the list of popular Bollywood Romantic Movies, Lamhe has surely earned a name.
The film finds a place in the Times Movie Guide's Top 100 Indian films. It is also in the Outlook magazine's list of All-Time Great Indian films
