One of the best known movies by the ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Khamoshi-The Musical narrates the story of a young girl who is brought up by her deaf and dumb parents. There is an unusual tagline with the name "when music shatters the barriers of silence" and that explains the name Khamoshi-The Musical. The story begins with Joseph and Flavy, a deaf and dumb couple who have a baby girl Annie. Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas play the roles of Annie's parents. Annie is a healthy girl who has an inborn passion for music which is further nurtured by her grandmother Helen.

After Annie, the couple also has a son Sam. However Sam dies in a tragic incident after falling from a bell tower. Sam's death brings a change in the family and both Flavy and Joseph become resentful about music. Annie is torn between two worlds- one of silence which is the constant companion of her parents and the world of mellifluous music where melody reigns supreme. She decides to embrace the silence of her parents and music gradually disappears from her life.

After many years Annie meets a young music composer Raj who comes to Goa in search of new tunes. They fall in love with each other and music is a string which binds them.

Initially reluctant about the match, Annie's parents try to dissuade her about her alliance with Raj. However, the couple continues the affair and Annie gets pregnant. Joseph refuses to take responsibility of his daughter. When abortion seems the only possible way, Annie refuses to commit its. However things improve once Raj gets back to Goa, but Joseph refuses to accept him as his son-in-law. Love takes a backseat as the couple tries to fight their battles. The whole story is narrated in flashback through Annie.

The happy ending of the movie denotes triumph of love over everything. This critically acclaimed movie gave Sanjay Leela Bhansali a new foothold.
