Released in 2007 and directed by Meghna Gulzar, `Just Married` is one of the blockbuster Bollywood romantic movies of the year. Starring Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol, the movie follows the lives of two individuals who have committed to an arranged marriage. Most of the shooting of `Just Married` took place in Mumbai and Ooty.
`Just Married` is such type of movie that begins where most others end. It is a film set in the midst of middle class India where romance and love end at the ultimate commitment-marriage. Will Abhay and Ritika find perpetual friendship and become eternal lovers? Will they survive their new-found relationship as husband and wife? Will their honeymoon be the beginning of the end?
The movie is about five couples who come to spend their honeymoon at Ooty and share the same accommodation. All of them are newly wed except for one who are rejoicing their wedding anniversary.
Together the couples take several tours and visit sites together in Ooty and get to know each other. Gradually but steadily host of stories open up about each of them:
Abhay Sachdeva (Fardeen Khan) and Ritika Khanna (Esha Deol), the two people brought together by the system of arranged marriage. Abhay is ready to work things out and open himself out to Ritika but she is holding back causing a few tensions and confusions in their life.
Rishab (Bikram Salujan) and Anu (Perizaad Zorabian), the envy of most other couples, give surprise to everyone at the end.
Kirron Kher and Satish Shah are here to celebrate their anniversary and always seem to be fighting each other in public. The fact is that they love each other a lot, but in a different but unique way.
Raj Zutshi (Arjun Kohli-AK) has been out of the country for a long time and is living with his girlfriend Sarah (Tarina Patel), of another nationality.
Ananiya (Sadidya Siddique) is Shoahib`s (Mukul Dev) sister`s best friend and had an eternal crush on him eventually convinced him to marry her. But Shoahib is unable to think of Ananiya as anything but only his sister`s friend. They are trying to work out their differences.
Marriage is often the conclusion of a perfect romance. An arranged marriage however, is the beginning of an anticipated romance. Perhaps the movie Just Married aims to portray marriage in mellow pastel shades. Meghna often uses smiles and silences to express emotions. Words are never allowed to get in the way, not even Gulzar`s superb lyrics that are resolutely played in the background. Both Fardeen and Esha try to escape the trappings of so-called masala movie to give sincere performances.
