The story revolves around the 64 year old Buddhadev Gupta, the arrogant and expert chef of Spice6 in London who falls in love with a poised 34 year old woman. This unconventional romantic story involves their short quarrellings; their patching up, and their struggle to convince the woman's father about their marriage.

Cheeni Kum begins in the kitchen of Spice6, an Indian restaurant in London. Buddhadev Gupta played by Amitabh Bachchan presides over all the activities in this famous Indian restaurant in London. He is extremely serious about his work and will fire anyone, committing the slightest of mistake. And he speaks greatly about the growth of the restaurant, the art of cooking.

Nina Verma sends back the Zafrani Pulao, which had an excess of sugar. As a meat dish, it would hardly have a taste of sugar. Buddhadev is mad with rage and starts blaming his patron for insulting his art of cooking. As soon as Buddhadev learns the truth, he feels ashamed.

Buddhadev and Nina bump into each other quite a few times over the next few days. Nina, a 34-year old software engineer, is intelligent, charming, cheerful and assertive and poised. Buddhadev is ostentatious, easily irritated and a lonely old man. He confides in a little girl Sexy and his mother, played by Zohra Sehgal in Cheeni Kum. The quick witted girl Sexy, played by Swini Khara is the only inspiration in his life. She teases him, and advices with wisdom, far beyond her age. Sexy suffers from leukemia and ultimately succumbs to it.

Buddhadev and Nina get closer to each other. Their romantic exchanges are beautifully depicted in the songs Cheeni Kum and Jaane do na. Buddhadev proposes marriage and Nina asks him to convince her dad. They reach Delhi. The conversations between Buddhadev and Nina's father, apparently two old men talking are hilarious. As soon as he discovers that his daughter wishes to marry the 64 old, the follower of Gandhian ideals calls a fast unto death. In the end, Mr. Verma gives in and what follows is a sweet and romantic happy ending.
