Bollywood movies have the reputation of producing some inexplicably good movies. There are certain films which cannot be admired in simple terms. The movie Amar Prem heads the list of such movies. The name of the movie, which means' Immortal Love' is a sheer specimen of how intense a Romantic movie can be and how deeply it touches our lover heart. This movie directed and produced by Shakti Samanta is still counted among the all time greats. The combined action of the two most talented actors Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, really added immense value to the movie.
The story of the movie is taken from the novel written by Bibhuti Bhushan Banerji. This 1971 Bollywood film is known for an unconventional story and wonderful handling of the theme. Most of the movie lovers know about Amar Prem which is a remake of a Bengali movie, by the same director. As far as the story goes, Pushpa (Sharmila Tagore), after being sold to a brothel in Calcutta by her village-uncle, Nepali Babu (Madan Puri), she started to entertain her guests.
Anand Babu (Rajesh Khanna), got attracted by her singing, as she was giving her first audition.
Rajesh Khanna, who played the role of a lonely business man who seek love. He soon becomes her exclusive customer and made way for the
love to bloom. The movie Amar Prem continues as Pushpa starts treating Nandu as her own son, who was actually her neighbor's son. The movie reached its climax as Pushpa had to stop meeting both Anand Babu and Nandu due to certain unavoidable circumstances. The story moves further as audience starts to step themselves in Pushpa's shoes and try to feel her love for both Anand Babu and Nandu.
The movie is gifted with some wonderful songs, owing to the music direction of Rahul Dev Burman sung by the playback singers like Kishore Kumar, S.D. Burman and Lata Mangeshkar. The lyrics are by Anand Bakshi have made the songs of Amar Prem major success. The screenplay by Arvind Mukherjee and dialogue by Ramesh Pant is too good to tag them as mediocre.
There are very few other Bollywood Romantic Movies which have achieved such immense popularity. Being a different love story, Amar Prem has been able to convey the message to its audience. This movie has won 3 Filmfare Awards for Best Dialogue, Screenplay and Sound Recording. While Rajesh Khanna was nominated for best actor, Kishore Kumar was nominated as best male singer.
