Bollywood, the largest film industry in India has been producing thousands of excellent movies over the years. Different types of movies are made in Bollywood in large numbers every year but romantic movies earn maximum popularity. 1990 was a year when several excellent romantic movies were made in Bollywood and Aashiqi was one of them. Released in the second half of 1990, Aashiqi proved to be one of the biggest superhit Bollywood romantic movies of all time.
Aashiqi-the movie earned huge commercial and critical success because it had a lot to offer to the movie watchers. Starting from the poster of the movie on the hoardings and the music cassettes, everything about Aashiqui is unique. Apart from the wonderful story, great direction by Mahesh Bhatt and superb acting by Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal, Aashiqi will always be remembered for its excellent songs.
The movie features songs like Jaan E-Jigar Jaaneman, Nazar Ke Samne Jigar Ke Paas, Dheere Dheere Se, Ek Sanam Chahiye Aashiqui Ke Liye and Main Duniya Bhula Doonga that are still favorite among the people of the country.
Aashiqi also marked the debut of actor Rahul Roy and actress Anu Agarwal. It also proved to be the biggest break for Kumar Shanu and Anuradha Padwal. The singers are praised even today for their excellent performance in the film. As far as acting is concerned, both the debutants proved their talent very strongly. The credit of handling the story plot impressively goes to one of the most talented directors of all times Mahesh Bhatt.
The story of Aashiqi, specially the beginning is a bit unusual compared to many other romantic movies of that time. The story of Aashiqi is about a boy named Rahul (Rahul Roy) and a girl named Anu Vergheese (Anu Agarwal) who meets each other in the police station. Both are arrested for creating disturbances in their locality. While Rahul expressed his anger against his father for getting married once again, Anu escaped from the strict vigilance of Arnie Campbell (played by Tom Alter) the administrator of her girl's hostel.
Rahul and Anu interact with each other and eventually fall in love. Rahul promises to help Anu so that she can get a job and their struggle begins. Rahul also starts trying to establish himself as a singer. Finally Anu gets selected as a model and Rahul turns into a singer too. After a certain period of time Rahul starts feeling that it is only for Anu's help that he is here today and this thought itself makes him feel irritated. He starts hating Anu and the gap between the two widens. Anu decides to leave for Paris for her modeling assignments.
But is it the way the movie ends? Well to know that you need to wait till the climax of Aashiqi. Thanks to the well written script and great direction by Mahesh Bhatt, the climax of Ashiqi is really interesting and touches the heart of the movie lovers.
