The plot of Aaina is based on sibling rivalry. Roma (Amrita Singh) and Reema (Juhi Chawla) are sisters. They are daughters of Mr. Mathur (Saeed Jaffrey). Mathur is a wealthy business man. Roma is a spoilt and fun loving girl while Reema is a quiet and reserved person. Although the two sisters are different in character, they both eventually fall in love with a man named Ravi Saxena. Jackie Shroff plays the role of Ravi.

Eventually Ravi also falls in love with Roma and they both decide to marry. Although Reema is heart broken, she remains composed. The ambitious Roma gets an offer to act in a film and dumps Ravi just before the wedding. Ravi marries Reema in turn.

At first the relationship between Ravi and Reema is uncomfortable and takes time to develop. Eventually both of them fall in love and start a happy life. Problem starts when Roma comes back. She is determined to get Ravi back and tries all means to break the marriage.

The music of Aaina also added to the popularity. The music was composed by well known duo Dilip Sen and Sameer Sen. The music was wonderful and the songs were very popular among the public.

Aaina also gained good response and won praise. Amrita Singh was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
