With the ever young hero of the silver and screen, Bharat Bhushan as Mirza Yusuf Changezi and Achala Sachdev as Mumtaz Mahal, the film was a big budget, meta starring attempt to bring out the colors of the flamboyant Mughal period. The story centered around the pleasures and pains of the kind hearted princess Jahanaara amidst the high taut politics of the Mughal court, where she was accused of having an affair with an ordinary prince, compared to the high regality of the Mughals. Like all other films of Bollywood Jahanaara is also a love story depicting the eternal strife between love and hatred.
The casting in Jahanaara was skillfully set with Bharat Bhushan and Prithviraj in the key roles, who perfectly delivered their dialogs raising the overall performance to an extraordinary level. Bharat Bhushan, the then leading romantic actor of Bollywood, portrayed the character of prince Yusuf, bringing out the real flavor of romance when performing with Mala Sinha as Jahanaara. Shashikala and Om Prakash showed excellent talent in bringing out their supporting roles providing quite a bit of leverage to the movie.
The melody of the songs in Jahanaara had the maximum contribution to its success. With Madan Mohan Kohli as music director and Rajendar Krishan as lyricist the sings in the movie were really divine. Composed with elegance, these songs were perfect in portraying the mood of the situations, livening up the overall performance. These divine super hit songs in the film owe a great deal to the Godly performances made by Talat Mahmud, Muhammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary geniuses in playback singing. Most of the songs in this film were the brilliant masterpieces ever performed in their careers.
Jahanaara was a complete success even in depicting the historical era with great precision and accuracy. The film did not lead to any kind of historical controversies in dealing with the facts and the fiction, perfectly blending them together with excellent mastery and skill. The artistry depicted in the movie was also beyond praise appealing a million throughout the country.
