Gandhi, My Father is a 2007 Indian film by Feroz Abbas Khan. The movie was produced by Bollywood star, Anil Kapoor, and released on August 3, 2007. Directed by Feroz Abbas khan the movie explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi played by Akshaye Khanna and his father, Mahatma Gandhi portrayed by Darshan Jariwala. Although being a patriotic movie it explores a completely different side of the story and is unique in its kind.
One interesting aspect of the film is that during the promotion intentionally there were no posters on the city walls in India. The reason behind this was that Anil Kapoor and the entire cast and crew of the movie decided that the posters should be stuck but not at accessible heights that any passer-by accidentally or intentionally disrespect it. According to one insider many times people tear out the posters in parts without showing any concern. Some people also have bad habit of spitting on walls, which is a complete disrespect to the type of movie Gandhi, My Father is.
The movie is based on the biography of Harilal Gandhi: A Life written by Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal. Though Abbas Khan`s film is very much different from this book the theme is similar. The entire shooting of the film was done in South Africa and in several Indian cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The premiere of the movie was held in South Africa where Nelson Mandela appeared to the audience through a video clip during the premiere of Gandhi, My Father. According to the producer of the film, Anil Kapoor, Nelson Mandela forwarded a special message during the premiere of the film. In that message Mandela spoke about Mahatma Gandhi and George Bush and raised some social points. He also thanked Kapoor for making such a film. During the premiere the present South African president, Thabo Mbeki, attended along with the rest of the South African Cabinet.
