Released on 26th October 2001, Ashoka- the film enthralled a large number of people throughout the nation. The great work by Santosh Shivan, the movie depicts the historical times of Ashoka, the great- the formidable ruler of Magadha (present eastern India), his life and his love. It was a big budget, multi starred movie with a perfect presentation of the olden times through the skillfully maneuvered script, written by Santosh Shivan and Saket Chaudhary.

The casting in Ashoka was simply perfect with the great actor Shah Rukh Khan portraying the ruler himself and the stunningly beautiful Kareena Kapoor playing the role of the fugitive Kalinga Princess, Karuwaki. The film was an instant box office hit as soon as it was released enthralling a million of audiences with excellent direction, masterly script and storyline.

Though little is known about the life of Ashoka during his exile from his own homeland, Magadha, Santosh Shivan and Saket Chaudhary did a great deal of research and analysis before attempting to work with the script of the movie.

This professionalism has contributed a lot to make the movie perfect avoiding any kind of controversies when merging the facts with fiction. The parity between the historical feats of Ashoka with the substance of fiction was really worthy of praise.

While the great actor Shah Rukh Khan ruled the screen with his impressive performance as Ashoka the great, Kareena showed excellent skills in playing the Kalinga princess Karuwaki. Along with the rich cinematography, the perfect screen settings and high quality graphics the overall performance of the movie excelled and far surpassed the expectations of the viewers. With the matured acting of Danny Denzongpa as Virat, Rahul Dev as Bheema, Subhashini Ali as Dharma, Ajith as Sushima and C. L. Gurnani as Pandit, the film was a perfect fruit of team work, mastery and skill in its overall presentation. The songs in Ashoka were perfect both in melody and lyrics, bringing out the charm of ancient India. The romantic settings with Ashoka and Karuwaki were so elegantly placed that they stole the hearts of a million viewers.

The story in Ashoka depicted the events that happened during the time of his exile from his own homeland to escape the wrath of his revolting and jealous brothers. Soon after his exile he went through quite a number of ups and downs and ultimately met the beautiful princess Karuwaki with whom he was in love at the first sight. The story continued to the decisive battle of Kalinga, when Ashoka realized then pain behind the useless slaughter of lives in the war and changed his outlook toward life with the divine blessings of Lord Buddha.
