Khandar is one of the gems of Bollywood movies which can be kept at the hall of fame of Indian film industry. This is a critically acclaimed movie which received mass appreciation from the film lovers. The movie, Khandar is a Hindi word which means ruins and the movie deals with the feeling of being haunted by the past. It is directed by one of the talented and legendary Bengali film director Mrinal Sen.
The film was made by Mrinal Sen with the help and association of Premendra Mitra in screenplay writing. Mrinal Sen is a famous Bengali filmmaker who is known for making meaningful and experimental movies most of which are influenced by social and political context. He made the film, Khandar in 1984 with a strong screenplay. The Bollywood movie can be categorized as a melodramatic movie. The story of the movie revolves around three friends and mother and her daughter.
There were three friends who came to visit the ruins or Khandar, from the city.
They came across an age old mother and her daughter who lived at the ruins. The three friends came to spend a small vacation and wanted to spend some time there. They came across this age old lady who is unable to do work herself and live with her daughter Jamini. The lady was old and blind and living with her daughter. Her daughter was waiting for her lover to come. These three people came from the city found it very odd and did not find it right to live a life like that. The lover of Jamini was already married and happily lived in Calcutta. The mother died after some time and the three people left the place. Jamini was left alone and lived a lonely life at the Khandar.
The film is set against the backdrop of a historical villa. Director, Mrinal Sen portrays the character of the mother and daughter beautifully. The characters of three friends were also treated in a realistic manner which has given the film a nice turn on. The character of the old and blind mother was played by Gita Sen and the daughter is by Shabana Azmi. Other crew of the movie involves Nasiruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur.
