Junoon is a magnificent movie that is remembered even so many years after its release. It is a superb movie that has left its foot print in the Indian Cinema. Released in the year of 1978, Junoon says a lot about the historical society. Directed and by the super talented and most eminent director of Indian Cinema, Shyam Benegal, Junoon laid its impression in the history of the Indian film industry and the society as well.

Junoon- the film was produced by Shashi Kapoor. The plot of this film was derived from the story of Ruskin Bond's "Novella A Flight of Pigeons". The star cast of this film includes various acclaimed actors of Bollywood. It featured Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Jennifer Kendal, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Nafisa Ali, Tom Alter, Karan Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, Pearl Padamsee and Sushma Seth. The excellent star cast of this film helped in making the movie a successful one. The hordes of talented actors who were part of this blockbuster film were as follows:

The plot of this movie was totally based upon the historical facts. With the establishment of the East India Company in the year 1857, some Mughals, who were led by Sarfaraz Khan, were determined to revolt against the British masters by killing them. Grandma, Mariam, and Ruth of from the Labadoor family seek haven with a local money-lender named Lala Ramjimal. He always wanted to recover his money from the Labadoors. He used to vent interest in their survival. Ramjilal cannot keep their presence undisclosed and Javed Khan and his supporters rush into his home, and then he takes the three women to his own house.

However, after some days Javed fell for Ruth and wanted to make her his second wife. Mariam and Firdaus, who was Javed's wife, strappingly opposed this desire. But Javed was evidently driven by Ruth's beauty and nothing could stop him from marrying her. Then things become more complicated when Ruth also increase her feelings for Javed. Later, the British seek revenge for those assassinated by the Mughals.

The soundtracks of Junoon include 4 songs, which were composed by Vanraj Bhatia and written by famous lyricists Jigar Moradabadi, Amir Khusro and Sant Kabir.

Junoon won various awards and nominations after its release. Of all the critical movies of Bollywood, Junoon has made its mark. Junoon won the National Film Awards in the year 1979 for Best Feature Film in Hindi, Best Cinematography and Best Audiography. It also won a number of Filmfare Awards in the year 1980. The categories were Best Film, Best Director, Best Dialogues, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Recording, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
