Bhumika is known as one of the unmatched and greatest Bollywood movies. This movie is another magical work of Shyam Benegal, a renowned and talented filmmaker in Indian film industry. Being directed by Shyam Benegal, the movie is based upon the veteran actress of 1940s, Hansa Wadkar. Bhumika can be categorized under the section of drama which is beautifully presented with the help of strong screenplay and extra ordinary cinematography.

Bhumika, the Bollywood movie is the fourth film of the legendary filmmaker, Shyam Benegal. The film was entirely based upon and inspired by the autobiography of the 1940s Marathi and Hindi movie star Hansa Wadkar. She was a well known theater and stage actress who used to make the audience spellbound with her powerful performances. The film was honored by two National Film Awards and Filmfare Best Movie Award. The film was also invited and screened at the Carthage Film Festival 1978 and Chicago Film Festival.

The film was originally inspired with the life of actress Hansa Wadkar. According to the film the main protagonist of the film is Usha, played by Smita Patil, one of the most talented and gifted actress of Hindi film industry.

Usha is known to be the granddaughter of a renowned female playback singer. After the death of the mother of Usha, she was taken to join the Bollywood film industry accompanying Keshav Darvi, a family acquaintance. This character was played by another powerful actor of the industry, Amol Palekar. She became a popular actress in Hindi film industry but did not have a happy personal life. She was married to Keshav who lusted after her since childhood.

But her husband continues to act like her manager even after their marriage and provoked and exploited her. He forced her to get involved with her co star Rajan and at the same time suspected her to have an affair with Rajan. She left her husband and took shelter first with her male co-star Rajan and then another landlord called Kale. Her husband arrives with the police to rescue her from Kale but he refuses to take help and support from her husband.

The film is known to be one of the most powerful movies which are dominated by female protagonist. It can be placed amongst the most successful and Bollywood critical movies. Smita Patil gave a wonderful, powerful and award wining performance for which she will be remembered. The entire crew of the cast is:
