Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate is a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film. This film follows the path of his earlier comedic hits namely Chupke Chupke and Gol Maal. Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate is a good time-pass movie but has failed to make an impact on the younger generation.

Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate was Mukherjee's come-back film and everybody had high hopes on it. But the movie did not do well in the box-office as Mukherjee has failed to realize the taste of the masses of the 21st century. The film also proves that only Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai have succeeded in changing over time. There is no doubt that Jhoot Bole would have been a mega-hit in the 1970's.

This particular movie is a sweet simple comedy. The dialogues are good but are not suitable for this era as it features old Indian cinema morals. It is also said that the film crumbled in the box-office because of its old boring dialogues.

The computer graphic laden video of the title song and then the old-worldly sequence in the very first scene of the narrative creates a contrasting effect.

The title song has a fresh touch. Apart from it, the other songs of the movie are too simple and thus fail to create an impact. Anil Kapoor is simply hilarious and has acted extremely well. Sometimes he even sidelines Juhi Chawla, who is known for her expert comedienne. The cinematography is good and acts an eye-filler to the songs. Juhi looks gorgeous in the sarees and salwar suites and has done her job well.

The film is quite similar to Mukherjee's popular Chupke Chupke in a number of respects. The film revolves around Shankar played by Anil Kapoor. He is an actor, director cum writer and has fallen in love with the beautiful Urmila (Juhi Chawla). But the problem is her father, Amrish Puri, a stern, retired police officer. He has already fixed Urmila's wedding with her childhood friend, Chanakya played by Saajid Khan.

To get his love, Shankar moves in as a paying guest in Urmila's home. He soon wins over the mother-in-law (Reema Lagoo), Rashid Mamu (Anupam Kher) and Chanakya. But Shankar needs to win the heart of his father-in-law and this appears to be a Herculean task. The harder Shankar tries, the more he tangles himself in a web of lies.
