The film went on to become a huge success thereby boosting the careers of the leading star cast. The director of Gopi Kishan was Mukesh Duggal and he is the producer as well. The plot of Gopi Kishan revolves around mistaken identity of two brothers who are twins. One of them is very simple while the other is clever and worldly wise. Gopi Kishan has many songs which has been picturised on the stars of the movie. The song and dance routine is very common in the Bollywood films. The music director of this Bollywood comedy film is Anand Milind. Playback singing was done by Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Purnima.

The star cast of Gopi Kishan consists of Suniel Shetty, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shirodkar, Kishore Bhanushali, Mushtaq Khan, Master Imran, Aroona Irani, Suresh Oberoi, Abhimanyu and Mohan Joshi. Suniel Shetty has to play a double role as the clever twin and also as the simple one. In the film, one twin is called Gopi while the other is called Kishan; so the name of the film. The cinematography of the film was by Akram Khan.

The story of the film is about both the brothers and the consequences faced by them due to their being twins. Gopi is a police officer who is very upright while Kishan is a simple fellow who is often mistaken by people to be Gopi.

Kishan is married to Chanda, played by Shilpa Shirodhkar. They also have a son named Tinku. In Gopi Kishan, the love interest of Gopi is Karisma Kapoor. She meets him when her pranks get her arrested. Being the daughter of Police Commissioner, she is released but falls in love with Gopi for his sense of righteousness and duty. After much persuasion, he too falls in love with Barkha who is Karisma Kapoor. In the film, we see that the twins are unaware of one another. Aroona Irani plays the role of Geeta who is the mother of Gopi. Suresh Oberoi is his biological father but Gopi's mother keeps this as a secret.

In Gopi Kishan, Suresh Oberoi plays the villainous role and when Gopi interferes in his criminal activities, Choudhury who is Suresh Oberoi tries his best to keep him off the track. Tinku the son of Kishan and Chanda is abducted by Choudhury, thinking that he is the son of Gopi. What follows after this are many action sequels where the good defeats the bad. The case of mistaken identity is solved and the families are reunited.
