Bheja Fry looks at life and its various odds and it selects a certain group of urban people who hail from clashing social and emotional backgrounds. But, what gives Bheja Fry a coveted place among the all-time Bollywood comedy movies is the funny yet sensitive approach.
Bheja Fry marks a new trend in Bollywood where shoe-string budget films, banking upon fine histrionics and strong directorial vision, gets good box office collection and walks away with impressive multiplex response. What makes Bheja Fry stand out, is its smart humor, sharp wit, a strong script and sleek treatment.
Bheja Fry, directed by Sagar Ballary and produced by Sunil Doshi, has an ensemble cast of Sarika, Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Milind Soman, Ranvir Shorey, Tom Alter, Harsh Chhaya, Ikhlaque Khan and Bhairavi Goswami. Sagar Desai's music does what is required, neither melodrama, nor loud, nor any 'inspirational lifting', it is best defined as a neat work.
Ranjeet Thadani (Rajat Kapoor), is a music company executive who derives pleasure by making fun of innocent people. But, what he takes as good-natured humor is not as simple as it seems and it ends in his wife Sheetal (Sarika) leaving him. Meet Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak), the adorable but, dim-witted officer from the Income Tax department. Ranjeet makes Bharat a victim of his stress-busting game and arrogance. It is his obsession for singing that gets Bharat trapped in Ranjeet's house. Bharat does a Jack Black thing, tries to be of some help to Ranjeet, only to mess it up further.
What follows is a series of near-disaster events that makes Ranjeet's comfortable life completely upside down. Mistaken identities in a somewhat 'Comedy of Error' manner and other oddities bring guffaws of laughter. But, this 2007 release never gets slapstick or becomes a situational comedy. Smart one-liners enliven the sequences and story and screenplay writers Arpita Chatterjee and Sagar Ballary deserve special kudos for their job.
Bheja Fry has given us some of the finest performers. Vinay Pathak carries the film on his shoulders and gets commendable support from the other actors including Ranvir Shorey. He plays with élan the role of Asif Merchant, Bharat's friend from the same department, who comes to help Ranjeet at his friend's request only to make matters worse. Both share a wonderful comic timing and an eye for detail which make their watchable performance a sheer delight. Milind Soman puts up a good show as the music director, an old friend of the Thadani's from the same league.
