This movie was made simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi. The Tamil version of Yuva is known as Ayutha Ezhuthu. Yuva is the story of the three young men whose lives get intertwined with each other in a fateful incident on Vidyasagar Setu in Kolkata. This incident changes the lives of these young men forever.

There are three couples in Yuva and the pairing between Abhishek Bacchan and Rani Mukherjee is liked immensely by the audience. Initially the character of Lallan which is played by Abhishek, was offered to Hrithik Roshan. It is probably the onscreen chemistry of the three couples which is one of the most talked-about features of the film. This Bollywood film deals with the importance of politics in the lives of the young generation and also deals with the fact how the young blood can change the society if they take the right course. It is probably the difference between the right and the wrong which remains the highlight of this blockbuster.



The story begins with Lallan, a goon who comes from Uttar Pradesh, misled by his brother and is used as a pawn by the local politician for his misdeeds. He is used extensively by the local politician for all wrongs and Lallan is exploited as he remains ignorant of the situation. Michael Mukherjee played by Ajay Devgan is a bright energetic student leader who understands the corruption of Om Puri, the same politician who uses Lallan for all his crimes. Michael wants to make a difference in the situation and relies on politics as a tool. He feels that if the young generation comes in the aid of the situation things can change for the better.

When people like Michael Mukherjee dreams of a better India, there are people like Vivek Oberoi or Arjun who wants to escape all the tantrums to America. He is an opportunist who only thinks of his welfare and dreams of a green card which according to him is the source of happiness. Shashi Biswas or Rani Mukherjee who is in love with Lallan and his wife, tries her level best to warn him against all the impending dangers. Both Esha Deol Ajay's lady love and Kareena Kapoor who plays the love interest of Vivek Oberoi remain concerned individuals who are aware of all the anomalies of the society.

Mani Ratnam portrays the sentiments of three young men who believe in different ideologies and have various aspirations. However when Michael after leaving aside his dreams of making it big in the USA prepares to fight against Om Puri, Lallan is hired to kill him. When Michael is shot at, it is Arjun who rescues Michael and gradually gets acquainted with this young student leader. After a series of incidents which eventually lead to a number of changes including Vivek's decision to join politics and Lallan leaving the paths of crime to start afresh Yuva links the three men in a common sentiment. The characters in Yuva realize their own dreams but in a different manner.

The last scene of the movie where the young budding politicians are seen entering the Bidhan Sabha strikes a positive note where the change seems evident. Yuva bagged a number of awards for some of the brilliant performances and the evergreen music by A. R. Rahman. This film is produced by G. Srinivisan and Mani Ratnam and Sabu Cyril did wonders with the sets. This brilliant movie remains an all-time favorite of the moviegoers.
