Soldier was supposed to be Preity Zinta's debut movie. But due to difference in dates, Mani Ratnam's Dil Se came out as her debut. She was however properly noticed and appreciated for her acting in the movie Soldier. Her co star Bobby Deol, who was the star of the movie also got huge rave reviews for his role as the action hero.

The story unfolds around a captain of the Indian army who is caught trying to sell a truck load of ammunition and arms to gangsters illegally. In the ensuing battle he is shot and killed. In the investigation that takes place later, the officer known as Captain Vijay Malhotra is found guilty of his crime. His medals and commendations are stripped of his body. His wife and son are not even allowed by the villagers to perform the last rites.



We are then introduced to Bobby Deol who plays a character named Vicky. Preity Zinta plays the character of a lively girl named Preeti who is the daughter of one of the army officials who had shot and killed Captain Vijay Malhotra many years ago. She falls in love with Vicky. Their love story quickly takes a dramatic turn, when Preeti finds out that Vicky is plotting a deadly game against her father.

As the story unfolds we realize that Vicky is in fact the grown up son of Captain Vijay Malhotra. He is determined to take revenge against the people who had framed his father and were responsible for his death. Preeti's father is one of the culprits.

Captain Vijay Malhotra had been the one who had caught his colleagues in the act of selling the arms to the gangsters. To try and hide their crime, the army men shoot Captain Vijay Malhotra and out the blame on his head. When Preeti finds out the real reason and the ugly face of her father he also decides to help Vicky in his crusade to get justice for his father.

Soldier was directed by Abbas Mustan and produced by Kumar and Ramesh S Taurani. Music for Soldier was given by Anu Malik and the rights for the music release went to Tips Music Films.

Soldier bagged the award for the best action. The award went to Tinnu Verma and Akbar Bakshi who had projected the entire action sequence. Preity Zinta was awarded the Best Female Debut Award by Filmfare.
